American Legion of Merit
Leon remembers: "Things had quieted down. The war had ended and Yugoslavian Marshall Tito had been stopped from taking over the Italian Trieste Peninsula. We were camped at a site not far from Naples, waiting for orders to board a Liberty ship headed for home when I was notified of the award. Like Miss America, I was stunned by the magnitude and rarity of the award, and the field presentation that followed in front of the men of the 363rd Infantry Regiment. I am seen accepting the medal, along with one other non commissioned officer whose name I can't remember. We boarded the ship for Newport News, Virginia, about a week later."
Sgt. Weckstein was one of twelve individuals to receive the Legion of Merit "For Exceptionally Meritorious Conduct in Performance of Outstanding Services."
